How To Grow Lettuce

Lettuce is quite easy to grow, if certain tips are kept in mind. The lettuce can be best grown during the spring and fall season. However, lettuce can not bear the extreme weather conditions. On the other hand, you can have lettuce throughout the summer season provided that it should be prevented from excessive heat.

In order to grow lettuce, you are required to add some fertiliser to the soil and in this way nitrogen will be accumulated for a healthy growth. For best results, work on soil for a few weeks before growing lettuce.

After that, sow seeds some 1/8 inch deep and at a distance of 5-6 inches from each other. You are suggested to sow the seeds in sun. However, if you desire to have lettuce all summer long then you should protect it from heat. As the weather starts changing, grow the seeds in the area having partial shade. It would be better to place the lettuce under the shade of long plants or trees.

Do prevent the leaves from getting wet during the time of watering. This eventually results in a disease. Water should be given at the base of the soil in order to avoid the plant from being completely soaked. Try not to use insecticides on lettuce. Slugs and snails are the enemies of lettuce and can destroy it in a short span of time. The best way to protect your lettuce from them is to hand pick them.
